Meet the Doctor

Dr. Shelley Sousa

Dr. Shelley Sousa,

Throughout my life I have had the opportunity to experience health from many perspectives. I was often sick when I was younger, with asthma, allergies, tonsillitis, bronchitis, and the flu. This had me in and out of many different types of doctors’ offices where I absorbed my surroundings, and what they perceived as health. I was under the impression for so long that the absence of disease means you are “healthy.” When I was 15 years old I hurt my back and could barely walk. I just so happened to have a chance meeting with a chiropractor who asked me if I needed a doctor, and at that time it seemed that fate had us meet at the perfect moment.

On my first visit I was introduced to a whole new world of health. My doctor explained to me that my spine was misaligned in several places and that was putting pressure on the nerves that were controlling everything in my body. I was helped along to understand that not only was this the cause of my pain, but it could also be the cause of some of the other problems I had been experiencing for so long. She showed me how my brain could not communicate to my body at 100% due to the misaligned bones pressing on the nerves. I grew to learn that my brain controlled my body by sending messages down the spinal cord and out the spinal nerves to the organs to tell them exactly how to do what they do. It made sense that if there was a misaligned bone putting pressure on the nerve that the message could get dulled and misunderstood. She explained to me that my body was made to work perfectly, and that when there was DIS-ease it was because my nervous system was not working to its full potential.

At that moment a light bulb went on in my head, and I realized that there was an entirely different way to view health. When I asked about my tonsil infections that had led the doctor to remove them a year previous to visiting her she told me that they were just doing their job of stopping the infection from spreading to my lungs and heart. As you can imagine, I was floored. MY body was trying to help me?! It’s smart, and with a little help it can heal itself! This was the perception of health that I adopted, and I ran with it. I went on to obtain a degree in biology from Fairleigh Dickinson University in Madison, NJ. I continued my journey at Life University in Marietta, GA, where I earned my Doctorate of Chiropractic. In that time period I also became a member of the International Pediatric Chiropractic Association through which I’ve received advanced education in the best ways to care for pregnant women and children. I was married in December 2011 to an amazing man named David Sousa, who is my biggest supporter.

My goal is to help people of all ages reach their full potential of living. I want to take people on a journey to true health and show them that, in the famous words of BJ Palmer, “the power that made the body heals the body.”
